How to play Seven Card Stud Poker

Seven-Card Stud (one of the classic poker games) is recognized worldwide as one of the best games of all time. In a Seven-Card Stud game, each player is dealt seven cards through the completion of a hand. Out of those seven cards, the best five-card hand among the remaining players wins the pot.

Before cards are dealt in a game of Seven-Card Stud all players must enter an ante. Initially, each player is dealt two hole cards face-down and one card face-up. The player with the lowest exposed card is called the "bring-in", and this player must make a wager of either a half a small bet or a full small bet (i.e., either $1 or $2 in a $2/$4 game). Play action moves clockwise around the table until betting is complete for the current round.

Note: For the purposes of determining the bring-in, ties in card rank are broken by suit, with the order being spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs (in descending order).

The fourth card received by the players is placed face-up; this card is called "Fourth Street". In this round, the first player who acts is the player whose face-up cards possess the highest value. This player has the option of checking or betting. If no player has an exposed pair on the table, the bet will be a small bet ($2 in a $2/$4 game). If any player does have a pair showing, the betting can be opened for a big bet ($4 in a $2/$4 game).

The next round provides each player with another face-up card, called "Fifth Street". This round is the same as the prior round; the first player to act is the individual whose exposed cards have the highest value.

Note: Starting on “Fifth Street” and continuing through the end of the hand, all bets are in big bet increments ($4 in a $2/$4 game).

On “Sixth Street”, every player receives another card face-up. Again, the individual with the highest value in exposed cards is the first to act.

The seventh and final card is dealt to each remaining player face-down. The final betting round continues with the first bet coming from the person with highest value in face-up cards.

If more than one individual remains when all the final bets are complete, the player with the best five-card hand wins the pot. If a situation occurs where players have identical hands, the pot is divided between the players with the best hands.

After the pot is distributed to the winner, you’re ready for a new game.
